Welcome to Kirkwood's first Green Newsletter! In this issue you will learn about the nation's largest privately funded green student housing development planned for Ann Arbor, and how you can earn LEED points with site furniture. We also clue you into downtown Plymouth's upcoming green street event, a potential local showcase for your newest eco-friendly project or product. Kirkwood is closely tracking consumer demand for green technologies and we can help you design and implement a green marketing platform that differentiates --and draws consumers to--your property. Please drop us an email at info@kirkwoodgroup.com to let us know what you would like to see in future issues.

New LEED Certified Student Housing Slated for University of Michigan's Central Campus

ANN ARBOR, Mich.---With their proposal to construct what is believed to be the largest privately-funded LEED certified student mixed-use urban development in the nation, local developers aim to enhance University of Michigan students' collegiate experience while enveloping them in a state of the art green environment that will teach them how to live more sustainably. Ronald Hughes of Hughes Properties and Daniel Ketelaar of Omena Real Estate Investments submitted their plans for 'University Village' to the Ann Arbor Planning Commission on January 2, 2008 for review. The first phase of the development is scheduled to open Fall 2010.

UM Central Campus

"This is a very unique, exciting, and noteworthy project - we are committed to building a state of the art residential complex on a brownfield infill site that incorporates sustainability best practice. Everyday, students will see how green systems work through live exhibits installed throughout the building, and they will come to understand how their actions impact the environment as we share monthly energy consumption and recycling reports with our residents," according to developer Ron Hughes. Landscape Forms Products Enrich Outdoor Spaces + Earn LEED Points

LF

Toni Gasperoni of Landscape Forms, a Michigan-based manufacturer of high quality outdoor site furnishings, met with us to discuss how the selection and installation of Landscape Forms outdoor products translate into better stewardship of the earth's resources. Here are her top three suggestions on how to utilize outdoor furnishings to earn LEED points: 1) LEED guidelines encourage us to 'Think global, Buy local'. The majority of Landscape Forms products are assembled in Kalamazoo, so products shipping to job sites within a 500-mile radius earn points. 2) Bicycle racks support bicycle friendly site planning. 3) Metal, such as aluminum and steel, are fully recyclable and qualify for LEED points under the 'recycled content of building products' category.
